November Solstice
Tales of a Stitcher-November 2023 Solstice

Solstice 36H x 40W 2012

Artist Statement— In Alaska, in the winter, we feel the darkness, carry it really, like a weight on our backs. Who knew the void weighed so much? Who knew darkness tipped the scales in a way that light could never do? Who knew dark was a bag of rocks tied to our ankles? A heavy trinket meant to remind all northerners of their location on the map.

Hey folks,

I have this new old idea that I am going to try and implement. I am going to show up in your email box approximately once a week. I am going to share a quote or a poem, some musings on that quote or poem, and a few images. Hopefully, you will open the email and partake in the thoughtfulness. That is what I want it to be—thoughtful.

Years ago, I did this on my blog. I called it Ideas, Images, and Updates. You can read a few of those entries here and here

So, let’s talk about the sun. Here is a poem for you to consider.

The Sun Never Says

Even
After
All this time
The Sun never says to the Earth,
You owe me.”

Look
What happens
With a love like that,
It lights the whole sky.

Hafiz (c. 1320 – 1389)

We’ve got about three more weeks before Solstice, so I will keep trudging through the darkness with my fingers crossed, hoping the sun keeps its end of the deal. If you want to geek out on Alaskan darkness, you can by following this link

This weekend I am teaching my final virtual workshop of 2023. It is called Game of Improv, and you can find out the complete details here. There is still time to sign up!

PS. I just finished a super cool article for QuiltCon Magazine 2024. It is all about you folk’s new favorite shape—THE POD.

Looking for the light!

Maria
